The term ritual is defined in Merriam-Webster as:

  1.  the established form for a ceremony; specifically :  the order of words prescribed for a religious ceremony

  2. 2a :  ritual observance; specifically :  a system of rites b :  a ceremonial act or action c :  an act or series of acts regularly repeated in a set precise manner

Ritual is a part of our every day lives. It's something we do ceremoniously, religiously, and in a precise manner. Just try changing it tomorrow and you tell me it's not a ritual. We get up, brush our teeth, shower, make coffee, check our phones...and most likely not in that order. I'm sure many of us have our phone right next to the bed and as soon as the alarm goes off we check who called, texted, posted on FB, LinkedIn, tweeted a pithy tweet, or posted a fabulous picture of their fabulous life on Instagram. These are technology and social media rituals. Each is a practice that has become a habit that morphs ever so sneakily into a ritual.  Checking my phone first thing when I woke up used to be part of my daily ritual.

I didn't actually think it was a ritual because where was the cloak and dagger, the burning of incense, the mumbling of a specific phrases and mantras.

Where was the ring of fire?

Where was the inner circle of initiates?

Where was the master? And then it hit me one day when I was belaboring getting up and sitting still for 15 minutes. I couldn't take the time to sit in presence with Source but I could pay homage to the i.....phone.

Rituals are uber important. They set the stage for all the pieces in our lives. They actually set reality in motion. Rituals create moments of magic, moments to see and to hear and to feel the hum of the universal (om - the sacred cosmic sound and the mystical syllable) and in that hum are the clues and codes to the High Self-the Universe inside of each and every one of us. I know that in repeating a ritual I am offering myself to the larger more expansive me and it reflects back into the world. Rituals are short moments of awareness repeated many times. And "short moments of awareness repeated many times become more automatic become more accessible become more continuous." ~The Mindful School. What ritual are you adding to your life today. Just a teeny tiny moment of awareness begins the journey into living a life you love. xo, j
