There is something seriously going on here in the American workplace and it’s not pretty.

I just reread the report, The State of The American Workforce, by Gallup. The report found that 70% of all employees are either not engaged or actively disengaged in their work. Meaning that only 30% of employees are even powering profits forward.

And the cost?

Just the actively disengaged employees cost US companies  $450 billion to $550 billion dollars a year. Realize that it doesn’t include the “not engaged” employees.

So what does this mean?

It means that we are checked out at work. We are unhappy in our jobs and we are watching the clock tick until we can get out of there. Is that any way to live??? NO.

First of all these numbers put a glass ceiling on your numbers and prevent your company from generating the profits it is essentially capable of but losing every day.

Companies who are struggling with absenteeism, low productivity, high health care costs and lower-than-they should-be profits, are the companies whose employees are not on board with the drive for success for themselves or for their company.

Engagement makes a difference to the bottom line. Bottom line: Engagement makes a difference to your revenue and hence your profits.

The report found that “only 22% of U.S. employees are engaged and thriving. When employees are engaged and thriving in their overall lives, they are more likely to maintain strong work performance — even during difficult times…engaged workers are the lifeblood of their organizations. Work units in the top 25% of Gallup’s Q12* Client Database have significantly higher productivity, profitability, and customer ratings, less turnover and absenteeism, and fewer safety incidents than those in the bottom 25%.
